Northern Montana Care Center (NMCC) in Havre was recognized by Mountain-Pacific Quality Health for its participation in a three-year project designed to improve the quality of care in Montana nursing homes. Brad Johnson, head of the Montana Nursing Home Quality Improvement Project, sponsored by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), presented the award to Lori Henderson, RN, Administrator NMCC, along with Carol Johnson, RN, Long Term Care Director of Nursing, and Madeleine Stewart, Staff Development Coordinator.

“Northern Montana Care Center richly deserves to be recognized,” Robinson said. “The facilities selected for this project made a long-term commitment of staff. With other Montana facilities, NMCC in Havre is changing the face of nursing home care in Montana. The CMS nursing home project focused on reducing the incidence of chronic pain, of pressure sores in high-risk patients, the use of physical restraints and the rate of staff turnover. The project also helped nursing homes find ways to move away from a medical, institutional model to a more homelike, person-centered model.

Robinson noted that overall, project participants significantly reduced pain incidence—by an impressive 33 percent and physical restraint use by an even greater 40 percent, and also maintained pressure sore rates in the 8 percent range, which is a very low number. “Montana nursing homes rank fourth in the nation for low pressure ulcer rates,” he explained.

“Facilities like Northern Montana Care Center deserve to be acknowledged for working on these issues,” Robinson said. “We all want the best possible care for our elders.”

NMCC's Extreme Makeover: Selected residents' rooms have been carefully chosen to be "made over" like the TV show! Interested Community groups and individuals meet with Ila McClenahan, Activity Coordinator, and the resident to discuss what would specialize their room. The group or individual provides imagination and talent to "makeover" the room.
