POSITION PURPOSE (Summary)
- Be proficient and polite in performing venipuncture, heel and finger sticks on patients
- Will know and adhere to OSHA regulations for Blood Bourne Pathogens.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
(Education, License / Registration, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities)
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED
- Experience in phlebotomy is preferred
GENERAL RESPONSIBLITIES
- Has read and understands hospitals Blood Bourne Pathogen regulations
- Familiar with priority for collection of specimens and priorities that are placed upon the laboratory by different nursing areas (i.e. ER-priority !1)
- Knows preservative for type of specimen being collected and where to find this information
- Polite and courteous when entering and introducing self to the patient
- Properly identifies patient by arm band and medical record number
- Puts the patient at ease by explaining the procedure
- Arranges blood drawing supplies needed for the procedure and prepares the patients to draw blood aseptically
- Identifies appropriate site to draw blood in relating to IV’s and uses appropriate gauge needle for the vein.
- Shows correct techniques and specimen collection for heel and finger stick.
- Properly labels collection tubes and requisitions at patient’s bedside.
- Processes specimen so the technologist can perform testing (i.e. make hematology slides, centrifuge specimens, label tubes and separate serum.
- Is familiar with hospital information system for ordering, charging and canceling tests on patients.
- Will be allowed to perform Certificate of Waiver tests under LL.A 88 after having shown proficiency. Tests falling under the waiver are urine dipstick, specific gravity, pregnancy tests, and sed rates.
- Will package, send and bill tests for reference laboratories
