Exercise Specialist

 

POSITION PURPOSE (Summary)

 

Designs, organizes, applies, and conducts medically prescribed exercise programs directed at the physical reconditioning of patients who exhibit cardiac and pulmonary inefficiency. Designs, organizes, applies, and conducts exercise programs directed at the continual well-being and improved exercise tolerance for geriatric clients and clients afflicted with a physical impairment which requires exercise in a controlled environment. Evaluates each patient who is referred by a physician to the program for monitored progressive exercise sessions. Documents and evaluates each session on the appropriate form.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

(Education, License / Registration, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities)

 

  1. B.S. degree in athletic training, health promotion, physical education, or other pertinent degree, which exhibits an understanding and skill in exercise physiology.
  2. National certification in exercise pertinent to exercise program and development preferred. (American Counsel on Exercise, A.C.E., Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, A.F.A.A., Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research, I.A. R.). Certification pertinent to geriatric clients or clients who are physically impaired or exhibit pulmonary and cardiac inefficiency preferred.
  3. Has knowledge relative to age of patients served.
  4. Amiable personality. Ability to make sound judgments and the ability to deal tactfully with and maintain an empathetic and understanding attitude toward patients.
  5. Basic Life Support certification
  6. Ability to learn from others.
  7. Ability to hold in confidence all personal hospital and professional matters.
GENERAL RESPONSIBLITIES

 

  1. Will provide continual monitoring of the patients during each exercise session and adapt the program based upon the physiological responses and pre-determined criteria.
  2. Will communicate and maintain at all times a cooperative, productive working relationship with the physicians, Cardiopulmonary Rehab Nurse, and Respiratory Care Practioner on the patient’s/client’s response to the exercise session or program.
  3. Assist the other Cardiopulmonary Rehab staff in performing CPR, should it be necessary.
  4. Develops, coordinates, and implements exercise programs designed to the benefit geriatric clients, or clients who have physical impairments which require supervised exercise.
  5. Adjusts individual exercise programs to provide continual benefit and meet the objectives of the program as prescribed by the physicians.
  6. Performs other duties as required or assigned.
  7. Explains purpose and procedures of the aspects of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation to patients.
  8. Documents all adverse reactions or problems that occur during exercise.
