Tech - Emergency Room

 

POSITION PURPOSE (Summary)

 

The Emergency Department (ED) Technician is responsible for age-specific data collection from neonate through geriatric and performing observations of patient’s physical, psychological, and social needs; observing and monitoring patient condition, records and reporting information.  The technician assists the registered nurse in developing a plan of care an providing direct patient care under the supervision of the registered nurse.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

(Education, License / Registration, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities)

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Completion of Basic Coronary Care Class.
  • Completion of ACLS and PALS within one (1) year of employment.
  • Certification in Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing within one (1) year of employment.

 

OSHA CATEGORY CLASSIFICATION

 

Category classifications have been developed to assist employees in determining their risk for occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.  These categories are:

 

Category I        Employee will have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine jobs.

Category II       Employee may have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine jobs.

Category III     Employee will not have exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine job.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Scope of practice includes observing and monitoring patient conditions as well as recording and reporting information.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Accurately and timely documents patient care including nursing progress notes / flow sheets, acuity sheets, unusual occurrences and corrective actions taken, and other documentation as per unit policy.
  • Maintains open communication with medical staff members.
  • Carries out the medical staff’s plan of care for each patient as directed by the RN.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed to meet patient needs.
  • Provides medical treatments to the patient as ordered by the physician and delegated by the RN.
  • Communicates with patient’s family and provides education and assistance where appropriate.
  • Demonstrates competency in use of medical equipment for patient care (see enclosed equipment list).
  • Demonstrates competency in Meditech computer applications for documentation purposes.
  • Takes and records vital signs accurately.
  • Carries out appropriate isolation procedures.
  • Obtains specimens such as urine, sputum and stool for various tests and cultures.
  • Performs CPR / BLS as needed.
  • Observes patients for signs or symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Observes patients for the need of additional safety measures.
  • Observes patients for age appropriate behavior, motor skills and physiological norms.
  • Maintains current skills including BLS and ACLS.
  • Assists patients with mobility activities (ambulation, transfers).
  • Applies telemetry monitors to patients.
  • Assists the physician with procedures such as cardio-version, eye irrigation, cast application, suture placement, peritoneal tap, chest tube placement, pelvic exams, and evidence collection.
  • Assists with delivery (lift and carry) of nursing equipment such as infusion pumps, suction machine and oxygen delivery systems.
  • Use of office equipment such as telephone, copy machine, fax, paging system, computer, printer and EMS communication radio.
  • Performs other duties as required.

 

INFREQUENT / MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Acts as a preceptor for orienting newly hired ER Technicians.
  • Answers the telephone and takes appropriate messages.
  • Participates in nursing, hospital committees or CQI teams.
  • Assists in transport of patient to new care location (CCU, Med Surg, TCU, NMCC) as needed.
  • Assists with locating physician via call schedule procedure.
  • Assists with anesthesia assisted procedures in the ER (orthopedic).
  • Completes Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing during accident and reasonable cause incidents.
  • Assists with providing patient care to in-patients under the supervision of registered nurse in the department..
