POSITION PURPOSE (Summary)
The Registered Nurse is a self-motivated professional registered nurse and resource person. She / he will be accountable for planning, directing and evaluation of patient care. She / he has knowledge relative to the ages served.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
(Education, License / Registration, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities)
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Registered nurse currently licensed to practice professional nursing by the Montana State Board of Nursing.
- Completion of PALS course within one (1) year of employment.
- One (1) year of Med Surg experience is preferred.
OSHA CATEGORY CLASSIFICATION
Category classifications have been developed to assist employees in determining their risk for occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. These categories are:
Category I Employee will have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine jobs.
Category II Employee may have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine jobs.
Category III Employee will not have exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine job.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Scope of practice includes:
- Utilizing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, patient teaching and evaluation to provide age specific direct care for assigned patients.
- Guiding and supervising other personnel regarding delegated care.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Delegates patient care to appropriate personnel (CNA, LPN, RN, Ancillary staff).
- Provides appropriate diet for age group and medical condition.
- Assesses patients for signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
- Takes and records vital signs.
- Evaluates for age appropriate behavior, motor skills and physiologic norms.
- Calculates and administers medication doses for patients based on age group, size, weight and medical condition.
- Assesses biophysical aspects including bowel/bladder habits and nutritional needs.
- Assesses skin integrity and develops plan of care to prevent skin breakdown.
- Assesses physical mobility and activities of daily living of patients.
- Assesses psychosocial aspects of patient, according to age appropriate needs.
- Assesses patients’ mental, physical and emotional status on a daily basis.
- Prepare patient, family and caregivers for discharge plan
- Demonstrates competency in Meditech computer applications for documentation purposes.
- Inserts and cares for foley catheters.
- Carries out appropriate isolation procedures.
- Obtains specimens such as urine, sputum and stool for various tests and cultures.
- Clarifies and implements physician orders.
- Orients patient to the health care environment and their medical status.
- Communicates pertinent patient data to health care team members
- Administers IV fluid, general medications and IV push medications.
- Performs CPR when needed.
- Demonstrates competency in the use of medical equipment for patient care (pulse oximeter, glucoscan, IV pump, PCA pump, feeding tube pump, suction machines, rotating mattress and crash carts).
- Accurately and timely documents patient care reports as directed by policy, including initial assessments and care plans
- Accurately and timely completes verbal shift reports on patients’ status.
- Assists in providing direct patient care as needed to meet all patient needs.
- Provides medical treatments to patients as ordered by the physician
- Maintains open communication with medical staff members.
- Assists in providing direct patient care as needed to meet all patient needs.
- Performs treatment to patients such as enema, douche, colostomy, NG irrigation, I&O, suchtion, and GU irrigation.
- Assesses patients for the need of additional safety measures (side rails, bed alarm).
- Makes up patient’s bed, occupies and unoccupied.
- Bathes patient with tub, shower and / or bed bath.
- Assists patients with activities of daily living as needed.
- Distributes meal trays and snacks and assists with feeding the patient s as necessary.
- Answers call lights.
- Performs active / or passive range of motion.
- Performs other duties as required.
INFREQUENT / MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Acts as a preceptor for orienting newly hired staff members.
- Answers the telephone and takes appropriate messages.
- Participates in nursing, hospital committees or CQI teams.
- Supervises and directs other personnel: LPN, CNA, flex staff,
- Assists in transport of patient to new care location (CCU, Swing Bed, NMCC) as needed.
